Dallas Paramedic Injured in Ambush Attack Discharged, Headed Home to Continue Recovery

The Dallas Fire-Rescue paramedic shot while responding to a shooting call May 1 was discharged from Baylor University Medical Center Wednesday, fire officials say.

William An, an 11-year veteran of Dallas Fire-Rescue, was critically wounded when a gunman ambushed first responders; An was shot as he treated a patient at the scene.

When officers arrived moments later, the gunman opened fire again preventing them from providing immediate aid to An. Officers soon after put themselves between An and the gunman, placed him in a police vehicle and drove him to a nearby hospital.

The gunman, Derick Lamont Brown, retreated and holed-up in his Dolphin Heights house where investigators believe he fatally shot his roommate before killing himself.

After nearly a month in the hospital where he underwent a number of surgeries, An was released Wednesday.

"Dallas Fire-Rescue personnel, members from the Baylor University Medical Center staff, family and friends were all on-hand as Will was wheeled from his room, in a stretcher specially outfitted to resemble the bed he was confined to for the last month, to the back of the very vehicle in which he last rode - Rescue 19," DFR said in a news release.

Fire officials added Station 19 was given the honor and privilege of providing An's escort detail, including a fire engine and the ambulance, to his home where he will continue his recovery.

"The An family would like to humbly extend their gratitude to everyone, from the day Will was brought into the hospital, through the multiple procedures and through today, for the compassion shown throughout this entire ordeal," DFR said.

The victim An was treating survived the shooting as well and was treated at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas. His current condition is not known.
