UUM Church Opens Chapel After Storm Damage

“It was a Thursday morning, and a hail storm came over and just sort of sat right on this part of Fort Worth,” said Rev. Beth Evers.

The University United Methodist Church had major damage during that storm, including to their 70-year-old clay tile roof.

“There were so many parts that were leaking; it felt like the church was crying,” said Evers.

She said they have a small congregation, but lots of spirit, and two things pulled them through: faith and insurance.

“We called our insurance company and they came out and everything started and it has been incredible,” said Evers.

Contractors cleared out asbestos, old pipes and electrical wiring while preserving their stained-glass windows.

“And this stained glass tells the story of our faith, and so to see it with such clarity is just fantastic,” said Evers.

After eight months of worshiping in their fellowship hall, many church members were finally able to see their renovated chapel for the first time on Sunday.

“Today, we came in and we prayed over the room and the response has just been incredible. I think people imagined, but could not fathom how beautiful it would be,” said Evers.

The unexpected damage from an unrelenting storm is seen as a gift that has revitalized this already strong congregation.

"You would think that a storm like this would bring everybody down, but there has been more vitality and energy through this whole process than we've seen in a long time,” said Evers. “And so, we're just very excited about all that we've been given."
